How To Handle An Auto Insurance Claim

Almost every driver has experienced a car accident at some point in their life. It is never a pleasant experience. Filing an insurance claim can be a lengthy and confusing process if you've never done it before. The National Association of Insurance Commisioners (NAIC) reports that delayed claims are the number one complaint made by insurance consumers. Here are some tips to make the auto insurance claim process go a little more smoothly.

  • Ask the insurance provider the steps needed to file a claim before even purchasing a policy. Each auto insurer has a different claims process. Have them walk you through a typical claims process.
  • Make sure you know if a claims hotline is available 24 hours. Find out if you will have one person in charge of handling your claim.
  • File your claim as soon as possible. Some auto insurers have a time limit for filing a claim.
  • Keep copies of all communication or documents between you and your insurance company, you may need them in the future.
  • If possible, take photos of damage to your car or any property. If you are paying for repairs that your insurer will reimburse you for later, keep copies of all receipts.

Filing a claim as soon as possible is always best. The sooner it is handled, the sooner you can be back to normal.
